Safran Electronics & Defense applies advanced technologies in a number of areas, driving its contribution to innovative aerospace and defense programs. Drawing on its long experience, the company helps boost the efficiency of combat platforms, as well as air transport safety.
The Optronics & Defense division has the best technologies in the world in terms of optronics systems and equipment for armed and security forces. It designs portable observation systems and optronics systems for land vehicles, aircraft as well as surface ships and submarines. It also oversees the FELIN soldier modernization program, based on integrated equipment suites for modern warfighters. In addition, Safran Electronics & Defense makes the silicon-carbide mirrors for the Gaia satellite, which will map a billion stars – in 3D.
The Avionics division's know-how in inertial navigation and civilian and military avionics is renowned worldwide. Its inertial and hybrid navigation, guidance and pointing systems are used in numerous airborne, naval and land applications. Its avionics equipment and systems such as onboard information and piloting systems, cockpit displays, etc., are in use in the largest airplane and helicopter programs. Safran Electronics & Defense also offers to its customers a full suite of flight data analysis services under the Cassiopée label.
The Electronics division develops sophisticated software for onboard systems, and makes printed circuit boards and computers, primarily for engine control, flight control and landing and braking systems. The Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 jetliners both use these products, as do the A400M military transport aircraft, the Rafale fighter and the NH90 and Caracal helicopters.
Safran Electronics & Defense in China
Safran Electronics & Defense's operations in China date back to 1980, when the company transferred the license for the PA155 autopilot to Lanzhou Flight Control Co. (AVIC LANFEI), to equip the Z9 helicopter/Dolphin. Safran Electronics & Defense established a branch in Safran Representative Office in Beijing in 2008, with a view to promoting and developing the activities of its various avionics and electronics divisions.
The local market of helicopters remains one of Safran Electronics & Defense's main focuses. Indeed, Safran Electronics & Defense provides the ICDS (Integrated Control Display Systems) for the AC311, while seeking to join in AVICOPTER's new programs with "New Avionics Suite", in cooperation with LANFEI, its long-standing partner. The AC352 – the Chinese version of the EC175 – will be fitted with Safran Electronics & Defense avionics equipment, namely actuators and AHRS (Attitude & Heading Reference System).
Safran Electronics & Defense also equips the ARJ21 regional jet with its Flight Deck Control System. Its Cockpit Control System was selected for the MA700 turboprop regional aircraft program led by AVIC XAC.
Still in the field of commercial aviation, the position of Safran Electronics & Defense in relation to Chinese airlines is bolstered significantly insofar as a major percentage of their fleets feature Safran Electronics & Defense's Flight Data Monitoring System (ACMS). Most Chinese airlines are also using the Analysis Ground Station (AGS) produced by Safran Electronics & Defense. An agreement with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) was signed to jointly develop a flight data management system at national level.
Safran Electronics & Defense is also present in China with the FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) units for aircraft, via FADEC International, a joint venture established with BAE Systems. The FADEC is used on board by a significant percentage of Chinese commercial fleets.
Safran Electronics & Defense is very active in China in the optronics and navigation sectors through its two subsidiaries Reosc and Colibrys.
- Founded in 1937 by Henri Chrétien, Reosc is a world leader in the design, production and integration of high-performance optics for both civil and defense applications, including astronomy, space, high-energy lasers and the semiconductor industry. Products and services by Reosc meet the most demanding requirements of a number of major research institutes and international scientific programs. Reosc designs and develops innovative astronomical instruments and develops all types of optical components (lenses, aspherical mirrors, etc.) and subassemblies, based on either customer specifications or drawings. Reosc has already taken part in several projects in cooperation with different public or private partners in China.
- Colibrys is a world-leading supplier of standard and semi-custom MEMS based motion sensors to the harsh-environments (Military, Aerospace and Energy) and safety critical (Industrial and Instrumentation) applications. Colibrys family of motion sensors include extremely low noise, shock resistant seismic sensors, high stability shock tolerant inertial and shock accelerometers tilt sensors as well as DC coupled capacitive vibration sensors. Colibrys seeks to increase its Chinese market share of accelerometers and MEMS sensors, for multiple applications, such as the seismic monitoring, the transport and the energy.
