Safran Landing Systems pioneered carbon brakes on aircraft, introducing this revolutionary technology that cuts weight in half compared with conventional steel brakes. The company equips more than 9,000 commercial aircraft in service. The company's expertise is also recognized in the fiercely competitive world of Formula 1 racing, where a number of teams call on Safran Landing Systems' high-performance carbon brake disks and pads.
Like many other Safran companies, Safran Landing Systems is investing heavily in electric technologies for new-generation aircraft. For example, it supplies the electric brakes on Boeing's latest, the 787 Dreamliner. Safran Landing Systems is also developing the electric taxiing system in partnership with Airbus. Instead of using its main engines for taxiing on airport taxiways, burning fuel unnecessarily, the aircraft will use small electric motors fitted inside the wheels of its landing gear. It will enable airlines to save up to 4% in fuel, reduce emissions on ground by more than 60%, reduce noise, improve safety and bring more autonomy on the ground. Safran Landing Systems counts more than 7,600 employees in Europe, North America and Asia (end of March 2018). The company ensures that the future generation of landing and braking systems will embarked the latest innovations to bring cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions to the market (lighter, quieter, smarter).
